Media Ethics

This course offers students a critical survey of media and journalism ethics. The course aims at giving students an analytical comprehension of key ethical issues that face journalists, the media, and its consumers. Some introductory topics include:

  1. objectivity in journalism
  2. the relationship between journalists and public relations professionals
  3. ethical issues surrounding reporting on violence
  4. the right to know vs. the right to privacy
  5. deception in news gathering
  6. the use of sources
  7. court reporting
  8. ethical issues surrounding reporting on politics
